Planning Your Move to, from, or within Thailand

Planning Your Move

Young man seated and writing on a notepad, planning his move.

In order to ensure that your moving experience with our relocation service is a pleasant and smooth process, carefully planning your move is essential. Please take a few moments to read this document as you prepare for “moving day”.

Please be organised! Most customer concerns or issues arise when essential planning is ignored or left until the last minute. Here are some suggestions and a checklist of your responsibilities.

Separate These Items from Main Packing

Prior to our packing crew arriving at your home, please segregate the following important documents from the main packing areas. This is important regardless of whether this is a private or corporate relocations move.

  • Passports
  • Travel Tickets
  • Visa Documentation
  • Motor Vehicle insurance, registration & proof of purchase/receipts
  • Important new/old property realtor or mortgage papers that you will need
  • Your handbag, purse, credit cards, wallet & cash
  • House keys
  • Car keys
  • Your packed suitcase to carry

Separate Goods into Types or by Room

If your move has more than one mode of transportation (i.e., air freight, sea freight and/or storage), it is a good idea to segregate packables in each room; or in one location so as to avoid items being packed incorrectly.

Please note that when planning your move, furniture items in each room can be labelled with different coloured stickers or “post it” notes. We would be happy to assist you by providing these, or they can be easily purchased from your local newsagent.

Valuables

Most moving insurance policies do not provide cover for loss of valuables such as jewellery, cash, bond/stocks, stamp or coin collections; unless you have made separate arrangements with us or your nominated insurer prior to moving day.

If you intend carrying such valuables with you, please place them in your hand luggage away from packing areas in your home.

Fixtures

Most Thai residences have permanent light fittings, which will normally remain in the home.

If you do need the services of an electrician to remove a light fitting ready for packing, it is not too late to contact us to arrange this – if you haven’t done so already.

Likewise, any fixed-to-wall cabinets, large oversize paintings, shelving or the like should be removed or disassembled prior to moving day. Our “handyman service” team can assist you, if required.

Your further responsibilities before leaving

You are responsible for correctly disconnecting all whitegoods such as refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers.

Though a professional tradesman may be required for the more difficult tasks, our crews carry basic tools and will gladly assist you with most standard appliance disconnections. However, if you are uncertain please check with us prior to uplift.

You will need to wipe/dry out appliance interiors ready for transportation. Also, most front-load washing machines require the bowl to be fixed/stabilized prior to transportation. Please consult the manufacturer if you are uncertain on how to do this.

As you can see, planning your move is a multi-step process.

PLEASE NOTE that all fees for handyman or any other professional third party services will incur additional moving costs, if they are not already included in our quotation as part of the relocation costs.

We’ve Even Got a Plan for those Last Minute Items when Planning Your Move

With most full house relocations, our team will supply a “Priority Last Load Carton”, for all those nuts, bolts and other bits and pieces like TV remote controls, leads and wiring.

It is a good idea to have a few quick-seal plastic zip lock bags on hand, so that all such items can be kept together and clearly labelled inside our “Priority Carton”.

Please let us know ahead of moving day if you require us to provide these quick-seal bags.

Remember to empty fuels from any lawn mowers or other machinery. Outdoor garden furniture, bicycles, shoes/boots, plant pots, lawn mowers etc should also be cleaned prior to moving. This will help avoid any overseas agricultural problems or soiling of other household items included in the same consignment load.

For health and safety reasons, please make sure that there is safe and clear access to all areas of the home including attics, sheds & under house areas. Siam Move Management is a “safety first” company!

Planning Your Move to Preserve Safety

None of the hazardous/flammable liquids or sprays in your laundry or kitchen areas can be transported. Please dispose of these prior to packing.

If you do need our assistance disposing of these or other unwanted household items, simply contact us in advance and we will arrange for a rubbish removal or skip bin hire company to collect/dispose of items.

To avoid re-connecting problems at destination with stereos, televisions and computer workstations, please take time to disconnect and label all electrical leads and plugs. While our packing crew is willing and able to assist with this requirement, they may not have the knowledge or be as thorough as you would be.

Take a moment to copy your computer hard-drive before turning it off for the last time in your old home. Having a back-up of your data is vitally important.

The loss of important data can be a stressful experience and it is quite common, especially when moving overseas.

Also please remove all liquid ink-jet cartridges from any printers as these can spill or soil other items in the consignment during transportation.

Please do not ask our packing crew to handle or to empty portable gas bottles or cylinders.

In some cases, empty gas bottles can be transported providing they have been “professionally emptied and certified as such” by a recognised supplier or retailer. It is your responsibility to have them emptied or disposed.

Paperwork and Before Leaving

Ensure that all customs and insurance paperwork provided is completed and filed with us prior to uplift. This will allow you time to concentrate on other more important tasks on moving day!

With all home relocations (except door-to-door direct local removals), our crew leader will ask you to sign our packing inventory. Please take a moment to check that all items nominated for shipment or transportation are detailed on this inventory. Our crew leader will also hand you a copy.

It is your responsibility to conduct a last minute check in the home once everything is packed and loaded to ensure nothing is left behind.

Remember to check all fixed cupboards, benches and storage areas. Items left behind presented to us after moving day may involve additional moving costs.

We trust that this advice is of some assistance as you are planning your move!

Please contact your Customer Service Manager at Siam Move Management if in doubt or if you require further assistance.
